It’s about enhancing user experience from every angle.

With OctoProctor v5.4.0, we’ve focused on improving the way test takers interact with the platform during exam sessions. And we also have thought about giving proctors and admins better tools behind the scenes. From a faster online proctoring system check to an improved UI, this release is built to meet today’s growing proctored test requirements.

For customers using our cloud-based version, these improvements are available immediately. For those who are enjoying an on-premise setup, we recommend planning the upgrade soon and enjoy management overhead and hosting costs reduction. Our customer success team will be happy to assist.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s changed in OctoProctor proctoring software — and how it helps

Performance & scalability enhancements

Improved server-side performance for WebSockets and WebRTC communications

This update optimizes the infrastructure that powers real-time video, screen sharing, and communication due to improved database performance (159% higher than in v5.3.1). And thus ensures a smoother experience for both proctors and test takers using online proctoring.

Improved scaling ability of the recognition API (recognizer)

Another great outcome of database optimization — facial recognition and identity verification now handle larger volumes of simultaneous sessions more efficiently. This ensures consistent speed and accuracy during peak testing windows, supporting institutions that run thousands of concurrent assessments using our proctoring platform.

Increased speed of the equipment check by 50%

The online proctoring system check — which verifies a test-taker microphone, camera, and internet connection — is now significantly faster. It helps reduce stress and wait time for test takers, speeds up onboarding, and minimizes delays at the start of proctored test sessions. Thus contributing to a more seamless testing experience.

Interface & usability improvements

Redesigned the FAB interface to improve readability and accessibility

The Floating Action Button (FAB) — a key control element of the proctoring software interface — now features better spacing, labels, and contrast. The result is a more intuitive and improved UI with enhanced accessibility for those with visual or cognitive impairments. Plus from now on, test takers can move FAB around the screen to position is with maximum convenience based on quiz content.

Added an indicator showing when session data was being saved before stopping (the Ready add-on is required)

A new visual indicator confirms that all session data has been successfully saved before ending an exam session. This helps prevent accidental interruptions, reassures test takers that nothing is lost, and gives test organizers confidence in data completeness. It also helps prevent data loss and ensures accurate consumption tracking of proctored sessions.

Added an incident flag to the chat message templates (drafts)

When using OctoProctor’s Limited addon for live proctoring mode — where proctors can only send predefined chat messages — they can now flag critical messages as incidents right during the sessions. These flagged messages are easy to spot during exam session review. They are also included in bulk exports, making it simpler to manage large-scale testing initiatives and ensure no important event is overlooked.

Refreshed WebSDK themes to align with the colors of the OctoProctor brand

We’ve updated the default look and feel of the WebSDK interface to reflect OctoProctor’s new visual identity — modern, clean, and more accessible. While this refresh introduces a branded default theme, it’s been carefully designed with clarity and user comfort in mind.

For test takers, the updated design improves readability, contrast, and visual hierarchy — especially helpful during high-stress exam conditions. For test organizers, the SDK remains fully customizable. If you're using a white-label setup, you can still apply your color schemes and styles to maintain your brand’s presence.

Made corrections to the Spanish localization

Spanish-speaking administrators, proctors, and test takers now experience clearer, more accurate translations. It improves comprehension, builds trust, and supports a professional experience for all Spanish-speaking users of our proctoring platform. Because clear, respectful communication matters, and is a key part of our mission to make assessments fair and accessible for everyone.

Admin tools & license management

Added a preview of the license key before adding it

At OctoProctor, user experience matters not only for test takers — it matters just as much for administrators and managers. With this update, managers can preview license key details before applying them. This minimizes the risk of applying incorrect licenses unintentionally, improving control and accuracy — especially helpful in a high-volume online proctoring setups.

Added the ability to prevent applying a license key with the wrong period

OctoProctor proctoring platform now validates license period before activation. It protects against expired or mismatched keys, reducing our client administrative overhead and ensuring license usage aligns with organizational timelines and proctoring requirements. We want managers to feel supported, not second-guessed — because admin experience matters just as much as test-taker experience.

Fixes

Fixed an issue with stopping sessions on macOS using Safari/SEB

As our solution is a browser-based online proctoring platform, we closely track changes in major browsers to proactively address compatibility issues. Our commitment to continuous updates means users always experience a stable, seamless platform — no matter the device or browser.

With this fix, session termination now works reliably across macOS, including when using Safari or Safe Exam Browser (SEB). This update ensures that session data is properly captured and logged regardless of device or browser, helping maintain data integrity.

Fixed an issue where the score was incorrect when the session duration was zero

This fix ensures accurate scoring and reporting for tests accidentally started and stopped immediately. It ensures accurate results in reports and prevents confusion for test takers and test organizers.

Fixed an issue with bypassing the incident lock

This update ensures that once a test taker is flagged and incident restrictions are applied, they cannot resume activity or bypass those limitations unless confirmed by a proctor. The update gives proctors greater confidence in the tools they’re using. By removing uncertainty around how incident controls behave, we help proctors stay focused on supervision — not workarounds.
