TL;DR

  • OctoProctor is now a Moodle Certified Integration, officially recognized within the Moodle ecosystem
  • Proctoring for Moodle works inside the LMS, not as an external add-on
  • The demand for secure online exams is driven by online learning, compliance, and AI-related integrity risks
  • Real-world OctoProctor’s Moodle-based projects show that privacy, scalability, and usability can coexist
  • The goal for the integration is is simple: make online exam proctoring feel like a natural part of Moodle, not an extra layer

Hurray, we’re officially a part of the Moodle ecosystem as their newly added Moodle Certified Integration. And yes, this is a big one for us. And it’s not just because of the badge (although we won’t pretend we don’t like it ;-). The main reason is that it means something very practical: proctoring for Moodle now works exactly where it should, inside Moodle, not around it.

What becoming a Moodle Certified Integration actually means

Becoming a Moodle Certified Integration Partner is not just about passing a technical checklist, though we should admit that Moodle’s one was rigorous. For us, it means the alignment with where the entire Moodle ecosystem (and assessment in general) is heading. Nowadays we clearly see three things are happening:

  • Exams are moving online (yes, they are, despite all these back to campus discussions).
  • Regulatory and compliance expectations are increasing.
  • AI is changing what academic integrity even means.

Put together, this creates a new baseline where institutions need secure, scalable, and defensible online assessment delivered inside the Moodle LMS, not somewhere on the side.

That’s where a certified Moodle-proctoring integration makes a difference. Not as an add-on, not as a workaround, but as a part of the assessment workflow. Something that supports educators and administrators without changing how they already work in Moodle.

Moodle Certified Integration is meant to guarantee that:

  • Proctoring doesn’t introduce friction.
  • Proctoring aligns with Moodle’s standards.
  • Institutions can strengthen online assessment security without compromising accessibility, usability, or trust.

In other words, it’s not about adding proctoring to Moodle, it’s about making proctoring for Moodle feel like it has always been there.

Our journey with Moodle LMS didn’t start yesterday

We didn’t build this integration for certification. We got certified because we’ve been doing this for years.

Since 2020, we’ve been delivering proctoring for Moodle LMS across:

  • Higher education (including entrance exams and remote student testing)
  • Corporate training and compliance
  • Professional certification programs
  • Recruitment and psychometric assessments

Over time, this grew into multiple successful deployments across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

What we’ve learned along the way is simple: If online proctoring software doesn’t feel native to the Moodle learning management system, it creates friction exactly where you don’t want it — during the exam.

Real projects, real results

Our journey with Moodle did not happen in a vacuum either. It grew through real implementations, different institutions, different regulations, different expectations, but always the same underlying question: How do you run secure online exams inside the Moodle ecosystem without breaking the experience?

Here are a couple of stories that shaped how we think about Moodle proctoring integration today.

University of Huelva (Spain)

The University of Huelva needed a secure online proctoring solution to support remote university exams — particularly for international students unable to travel — while fully complying with strict GDPR and Spanish data protection laws. A key requirement was to avoid biometric data processing and video recording, while integrating seamlessly with their existing Moodle environment. OctoProctor configured a privacy-first setup focused exclusively on anomaly detection, disabled biometric-related checks, and provided comprehensive DPIA documentation, legal certificates, and data flow transparency. We deployed both a cloud test instance and an on-premise installation, integrated with Moodle via LTI, and worked closely with the university’s IT team to resolve network, WebRTC, and classroom infrastructure challenges. As a result, the university successfully rolled out proctored online exams for remote cohorts, stabilized live monitoring workflows, extended the cooperation into subsequent academic years, and now confidently operates GDPR-compliant remote assessments at scale.

But probably the best way to understand how this played out is from their side:

“As a public university subject to strict GDPR and Spanish data-protection rules, we needed a solution that allowed remote exams without biometric processing or video recording. OctoProctor worked closely with us to configure a compliant, Moodle-integrated setup and provided strong legal and technical support throughout implementation. Today the system runs properly for our live sessions, and we consider OctoProctor a trusted long-term partner.”

— Rafael López de Ahumada Gutiérrez, Director of Informática, Comunicaciones y Enseñanza Virtual (ICyEV)

What this project reinforced for us is simple: compliance and usability are not mutually exclusive, but only if the system is designed that way from the start.

Another project highlight that was about large-scale certification and recruitment assessments, where the stakes are operational and financial as much as academic. When hiring decisions depend on assessment results, reliability stops being a nice-to-have, it becomes critical.

LearnTech (South Africa)

LearnTech, a South African eLearning services provider supporting large corporate and financial institutions, required an online proctoring solution to secure high-stakes regulatory bodies and psychometric recruitment assessments requirements conducted at significant scale. One of their key clients runs over 100,000 hours of evaluations annually, where the risk of hiring unqualified candidates — combined with strict labor legislation making terminations costly — created a clear need for reliable exam integrity controls. LearnTech partnered with OctoProctor in 2020 and has continued expanding the collaboration. By implementing OctoProctor’s scalable LearnTech successfully secured tens of thousands of high-stakes assessments per year, improved reliability compared to their internal prototype, and established proctoring as a trusted component of their enterprise LMS and as well as Moodle offering.

At that scale, the impact becomes very tangible. As LearnTech puts it:

“When you’re protecting recruitment assessments at the scale we operate — including clients running over 100,000 hours of evaluations per year — reliability is non-negotiable. After attempting to build our own proctoring system, we realized we needed a more mature, scalable solution. OctoProctor delivered the functionality, pricing model, and long-term partnership we were looking for, and it has become a trusted part of our Moodle services portfolio.”

— Richard Lilford, Managing Director, LearnTech

Two very different cases, one driven by privacy and regulation, the other by scale and operational risk. But both pointing to the same conclusion. The key thing is making sure the system holds — technically, legally, and operationally — under real-world conditions.

Why institutions choose OctoProctor for Moodle

If you’re already working inside Moodle, the last thing you want is a proctoring tool that feels like an external add-on. That’s where most integrations fall apart.

OctoProctor is now a Moodle Certified Integration. Not just compatible, not works with, but built to Moodle’s integration standards. Which means you launch and manage proctored exams directly inside Moodle, no duplicated workflows, no switching between systems, no extra cognitive load for administrators or test takers.

And once the exam starts, everything behaves the way it should.

Identity is verified. The environment is checked. Monitoring runs continuously. But it doesn’t feel intrusive. The goal is exam integrity, not disruption, protecting against impersonation and misconduct while staying aligned with privacy expectations and compliance requirements.

From the test taker’s perspective, it’s even simpler. There’s nothing to install. No plugins, no extensions, no last-minute technical surprises. Everything runs in the browser. That alone removes a surprising amount of friction — fewer support tickets, fewer failed attempts, fewer stressed candidates.

Integrity doesn’t equal monitoring. It’s being able to explain what happened.

That’s why every session comes with clear, structured evidence — timelines, recordings, screenshots, flagged events. Not vague “trust the system” signals, but actual data that can be reviewed, challenged, and defended. Especially important when exams are high-stakes, regulated, or subject to appeal.

Not every exam needs the same level of control.

Some require live supervision. Some work perfectly with automated or AI-assisted monitoring. Some sit somewhere in between. OctoProctor lets you choose (and adjust ) without changing platforms. Because real-world assessment is never one-size-fits-all.

And then there’s scale.

Whether you’re running admissions, certifications, or continuous assessment, the system needs to hold up under pressure. Thousands of concurrent sessions shouldn’t be a “special case.” They should be business as usual. That’s exactly what OctoProctor is built for.

All of this is underpinned by a privacy-by-design approach. Data collection is minimized. Monitoring is purposeful, not excessive. Regional hosting options are available. The goal is to support online assessment security without turning exams into surveillance exercises.

Even at the default browser level, protection is handled differently. Instead of forcing test takers into additional lockdown software, OctoProctor’s proctoring applies exam controls directly in the browser — detecting virtual machines, restricting specific actions when needed — while keeping the experience lightweight and accessible.

Accessibility matters.

Not just for learners, but for administrators too. Interfaces are designed to be clear, usable, and compatible with assistive technologies. For OctoProctor, building inclusive assessment processes means supporting everyone involved.

Finally (and this often gets underestimated), let’s talk about support.

Integrations don’t live in isolation. They evolve, they get tested, they break in unexpected ways. Having a team that understands both proctoring and Moodle makes a difference. Real onboarding, real guidance, and real responses when something needs attention.

Because in the end, this is not about adding proctoring to Moodle. It’s about making secure online exams feel like a natural part of the Moodle experience.

Becoming a Moodle Certified Integration is not the finish line

We’re continuing to invest in:

  • Accessibility (for both test takers and administrators)
  • Seamless UX inside the Moodle learning management system
  • Flexible approaches to proctoring for Moodle (not one-size-fits-all)
  • Making online exam proctoring feel less like control and more like support

Because the goal is to make exams fair, secure, and actually aligned with how people learn today, rather than more strict.
